edworth House is located on the outskirts of Shildon. Built in 2004, it is a modern spacious purpose built building set in its own grounds with 57 en-suite bedrooms, four of which are adjoining - which is ideal for couples. All rooms have TV points, nurse call point and electrical sockets. A lift is provided for our wheelchair users.
Within the building there are two main units: one unit accommodating up to 25 residential clients and a second unit accommodating up to 12 nursing clients experiencing dementia type illnesses and 14 general nursing clients. Our third unit has accommodation for up to 6 people all with en-suite.
We can cater for long or short stay placements, and can provide specialised diets and we actively encourage residents to personalise their rooms.
As Redworth House is predominantly a Dementia Home we have tried to assist with orientation and stimulation by having clear signage and memory boxes by bedroom doors, internal decoration which is colourful stimulating and interactive. Life History work is paramount to understanding an individual’s perspective and staff will work with residents and their family to explore this.
The residential unit, which also caters for early onset dementia, has a large T.V lounge where residents can enjoy watching T.V or DVD’s etc, alternatively there is a quiet lounge or the conservatory, both of which have direct accessinto our beautiful garden where residents can enjoy some quieter moments. Most of the residents enjoy our nutritious home-cooked food in our spacious and welcoming dining room which has direct access to the courtyard garden.
he nursing dementia unit also has two T.V lounges, and there is also a quiet lounge or a café area which has direct access to the outside balcony for residents to use if they prefer a quiet environment. Residents can enjoy having meals in the dining room, café area or their bedroom.
We have two dedicated social life facilitators whose role involves organising and arranging activities, outings and fundraising for our residents. We are often visited by our local school children who join in our various activities. We hold monthly church services and welcome visiting clergy. Also available on a daily basis are a wide range of activities such as arts & crafts, bingo, dominoes, board games, sing-a-longs, gentle exercise sessions and reminiscence groups. We also have regular entertainers in the Home which are thoroughly enjoyed.
We welcome a fully qualified hairdresser and barber working alternate Thursdays in our salon. Chiropody occurs every six weeks. Residents have access to a full range of external professional such as dietician, speech and language therapist, GP visits, dental needs and optical tests are available as when required.
High standards of care are our primary concern and this is tested by way of internal audits and checks. The Manager operates an open door approach and holds monthly resident and relative meetings and has a monthly surgery to discuss any concerns or worries. We also send out surveys to relatives and other healthcare professionals and will post the results for all to read.
The Home is close to all major routes with a bus stop directly outside of the Home. The centre of Shildon and the train station are approximately ½ mile away. Situated in a quiet area, it has a pleasant conservatory overlooking a well-maintained enclosed themed and interactive garden to the rear and a formal courtyard garden to the front. Both attract a variety of wildlife, such as birds, rabbits and squirrels and offer a safe and secure haven for the Service Users to enjoy. Ample parking is situated at the front of the building.
